June 14, 2019 (El Cajon) – A transient pushing a shopping cart in traffic lanes on southbound State Route 67 at 3:37 a.m. on June 9th near the I-8 interchange stepped “directly into the path” of a Ford F-150 pickup. The driver, a 27-year-old El Cajon man, was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian and shopping cart, says Officer Jeff Christy with the California Highway Patrol.

Emergency personnel responded immediately, however the victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel. The driver of the Ford remained on scene and provided a statement to the investigating officers. The driver of the Ford was wearing his seatbelt and not injured.

There was no indication of alcohol and/or drug impairment by the driver of the Ford. It is unknown if the pedestrian was impaired and will be determined with further investigation, says Officer Christy. The identity of the deceased will be released through Medical Examiner’s office once family notification has been made.
