August 21, 2015 (Borrego Springs)—A mother and her infant son are dead of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision that occurred yesterday shortly before 4 p.m. in Borrego Springs. Three other people were injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Erendyra Fierro, 27, of Borrego Springs was driving Volkswagon southbound on Borrego Springs Road south of San Pablo Road when she attempted a U-turn but didn’t see a Dodge Ram pickup truck approaching from behind.  Her son, just under two months old, and a 51-year-old woman were passengers. The baby was properly restrained in a rear-facing car seat behind the driver.

According to CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein, Fierro pulled directly into the path of travel of the Dodge, which was traveling within the speed limit.  Pearlstein said, “the driver of the Dodge had no time to take evasive action. He applied his brakes but was unable to stop before the front of the Dodge struck the left side of the VW.”

Due to the force of the impact, Fierro died at the scene.  The baby boy was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where despite aggressive attempts at resuscitation, he succumbed to his injuries as well.

The driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries.  A passenger in the Dodge suffered moderate, non-life threatening injuries.

Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision, according to Officer Pearlstein.
