December 2, 2008 (Otay Mesa) -- Senator Barbara Boxer announced today that a new port of entry will be developed two miles east of the current Otay Mesa border crossing, a project she and Senator Diane Feinstein pushed through the Administration.
In the announcement, she wrote that the new port should alleviate congestion and accommodate future trade and growth, while maintaining the highest level of security. Economic impacts to California from the new port of entry could exceed $31 billion over the first ten years of operation, with electronics, machinery, and manufacturing industries receiving the largest benefit, she said.
Concerted efforts of many people in the County of San Diego and at Caltrans propelled the plans forward, she noted, culminating in a presidential permit signed by Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte to begin development. I commend everyone for working together to accomplish this significant step and look forward to working with them as this process continues.
