Aztecs drop second game of tournament

February 25, 2017 (Newport Beach, Calif.) - No. 12 San Diego State was upset by 16th-ranked UC San Diego on Saturday morning, 10-1, at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Aztecs’ second loss of the tournament dropped them to 4-6 on the season.

The Tritons scored twice in the first quarter and the first goal of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Caroline Israels scored on a power-play chance with 5:55 left in the half, but the Aztecs allowed two more goals and UCSD carried a 5-1 lead into intermission.

San Diego State’s defense kept it in the game when action resumed, but the Tritons scored with 4:53 and 1:11 left to move out in front, 7-1. Then in the fourth period, UC San Diego added three more goals to avenge its 5-4 loss to the Aztecs earlier this season in La Jolla.

SDSU will now face Golden Coast Conference foe, Loyola Marymount, at 4 p.m. PT at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach.
