March 29, 2016 (New York) - The winner of George Washington-SDSU takes on Valparaiso in the National Invitation Tournament championship game on Thursday.
It was now or never for the Aztecs. They failed at getting into the Big Dance, so they knew that this was their chance.
Unfortunately, the Aztec’s kryptonite seems to be two of the biggest cities in the world. Cities with reputations. Las Vegas for gambling and New York for glitz and glamor.
The Aztecs got off to a slow start in the first half, or, as ESPN play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen put their lack of opportunities at the offensive end, “it’s been ugly and it gets uglier.”
SDSU couldn’t get anything to fall, falling behind 6-0 and not tallying until 14:51 of the first half. That, coincidentally, is when they got their mojo back.
No one ever says this about the Aztecs, but the free throws helped, as Jeremy Hemsley hit one to tie the game.
But George Washington’s Alex Mitola hit a three to bring the score to 9-6. Winston Shepard got it right back for the Aztecs, hitting a nice-looking baseline jumper.
George Washington broke the game open with 11 minutes left, leading 14-8. Ironically, they had six fouls at this point, but it was SDSU that got the foul trouble this time around. Offensive foul after offensive foul. SDSU trailed by nine halfway through the first half.
At the half, the Aztecs trailed 35-20 and George Washington was on a 16-4 run and scored 14 of 35 points off of nine--NINE--turnovers by the Aztecs.
In the second half, it only got worse. George Washington pulled out to their largest lead of the game at 40-24 with 17:15 left in regulation.
SDSU was only shooting 26 percent from the field four minutes into the second half. They were down by 20 with 14 minutes left.
SDSU loses 65-46. That’s the end of Winston Shepard’s career as an Aztec. No offense, no defense, turnovers galore and the Aztecs come home to no brass band and no pomp and circumstance. Their season is over. George Washington moves on to take on Valparaiso on Thursday night in the NIT championship game.
