July 30, 2016 (San Diego) - Football is upon us.  Almost.

The Chargers started their training camp today at Chargers Park.  Each training camp session consists of two-hour practices.

Today, the Chargers worked on rushing and tackling drills.  Quarterback Philip Rivers took a few practice passes.

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy was happy with the first day.  He said it was a fun first day and the fan support was excellent.

“Once we put the pads on, that's what training camp is about,” McCoy said.  The Chargers start pad training on Monday.  McCoy said no one will go easy on each other.  Asked about Melvin Gordon's status:  “he's good to go.”

“We just picked right back up,” Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said.  “The more balanced we are, it'll help us.”

When asked about Gordon: “he felt more confident and comfortable and that's key for a running back.”

“When you're having fun, that's what the sport's about,” said Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett.

“I definitely feel more confident,” said running back Melvin Gordon.  He says he looks up to Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

“I really don't want to talk too much (on last year),” Gordon said about his injury. “It's a new year…I'm not being held back from anything.”

Day two of camp is tomorrow at 3 p.m.
