August 2, 2016 (San Diego) — San Diego Police Officer Wade Irwin faces a long recovery after being shot on July 28th in a gun battle that killed his partner, Officer Jonathan DeGuzman.

A fund has been set up to help Officer Irwin, wife and baby daughter Officer Irwin underwent surgery and is expected to survive. He is a nine-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department. You can donate to help him and his family during these financially challenging times at gofundme.com/irwinfamilyfund

You can also donate to help the family of murdered Officer DeGuzman at the San Diego Police Officers Association website, www.SDPOA.org, and note that your donation is for Officer Jonathan DeGuzman, who left behind a widow and children.

Officer DeGuzman was previously awarded a Purple Heart after surviving a stabbing during a traffic stop 13 years ago.

The tragedies follow a string of police shootings in Dallas, New Orleans and other places.  San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman has said it is not yet known what led up to the shootings, though body camera footage is being reviewed, or if there is any connection to police shootings elsewhere.

Jesse Gomez was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a trail of blood led police to a ravine where he fled after the policemen were shot. Gomez was also shot in the chest but is expected to survived, according to SDPD.

A second man, Marcus Cassani, gave himself up for arrest shortly after a SWAT team surrounded his home nearby the morning after the deadly shootings.  Chief Zimmerman has described him as a “possible suspect.”

A public memorial service will be held on Friday, August 10th at 11 a.m. at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Drive in El Cajon.

Parking is available at Granite Hills High School, 1719 East Madison Avenue, El Cajon. Shuttle service to the church will start at 9 a.m. Flower deliveries should be scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m.
