April 9, 2010 (San Diego) – Border Angels, a San Diego-based organization, is seeking donations of nonperishable food, clothing, tents, sleeping bags, water and other vital supplies for earthquake victims left homeless with no electricity or water in Baja California, Mexico. In some areas, flooding caused by the quake has compounded the misery. "Water sprouting from the ground has sulfur," Estela Flores told East County Magazine.

Flores was in the area when the quake struck. "We all heard the rocks rolling down the mountains. We just looked up to see all the dust," she said.

Border Angels has already shuttled some items to Mexico and will lead additional caravans on future dates. Monetary donations are also being accepted.

“One of the neediest areas that needs our help is the Cucapa community south of Mexicali,” said Enrique Morones, founder of Border Angels. Best known for providing water to aid border crossers in the desert, the group’s motto is “Saving people’s lives, making a difference.” Volunteers with passports are also sought to assist with the caravans.

Donated items may be brought to St Philip the Apostle Church at 2660 Hardy Drive in Lemon Grove. Drop off times are Saturday 9-10 a.m., Monday and Friday 7-10 p.m. Questions? Call Isabel Montano at 619-739-5509.

Additional drop-off locations are available in Chula Vista, downtown San Diego, Vista and Imperial Valley. For details on additional locations, visit www.borderangels.org.
