Public invited to meet elected officials and candidates

August 26, 2010 (La Mesa) –Instead of its annual convention, San Diego's County Democratic Party is hosting a free campaign kickoff and rally from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 29 at Harry Griffen Park in La Mesa. Members of the California Legislature as well as candidates for Congress, State Senate, Assembly, and local races will be at the event, which includes a potluck picnic and entertainment.

“Our national party is very aggressive about taking meetings into `red’ territory—and we are more than willing to do the same,” Jess Durfee, chairman of the San Diego County Democratic Party, told East County Magazine. “We’ve already seen the registration in La Mesa turn to become more Democratic than Republican, and our presence can only help to continue that trend.”

Linda Armacost, president of La Mesa-Foothillls Democratic Club, said she is “thrilled” to have the major event in East County. “It’s a real feather in our cap—and a big boost for our candidates.” Members of 40 chartered Democratic Clubs countywide have been invited, she added.

Confirmed elected officials planning to attend include State Senator Christine Kehoe and Assemblyman Marty Block. Candidates confirmed to date include Ray Lutz (52nd Congressional district), Paul Clay (36th State Senate), Mark Hanson (77th Assembly District), Patrick Dean (La Mesa City Council), and Jay Steiger (La Mesa-Spring Valley School District). Additional candidates, officials, and special guests are expected.

Guests are asked to bring a main dish, side dish, salad or dessert to the free potluck. Beverages, plates and utensils will be provided. Seating is built into an outdoor ampitheater, though guests may wish to bring blankets or lawn chairs to claim a spot in the shade.

Local Democrats may also pick up signs, buttons or bumper stickers to support their favorite candidates.

Harry Griffen Park is located at 9550 Milden Street in La Mesa, six miles east of SDSU off of I-8.

Whats wrong?

Whats wrong here. My Republicans recently wanted me to pay $50.00 to meet the canidates and here we have the Democrats holding a meeting for free. Does this explain why the Republican Party Machine is going backwards in San Diego?
