Witness punctures tire, enabling authorities to arrest fleeing suspects
August 8, 2011 (Lemon Grove) – Updated August 9, 2011: A “hot prowl” burglary reported last night at 10:16 p.m. resulted in a shooting that has left the victim hospitalized in critical condition.
"He was shot in the chest," Detective Brennan Lane at the Lemon Grove substation told East County Magazine. The victim, who is in his 20s, is a resident at the home.
A father and son, Gregory Alan Jewell and Joshua Alan Wineski of Santee, have been taken into custody as suspects in the shooting in the 18000 block of Bakersfield Street in Lemon Grove.
"One of the two suspects knew the victim," Detective Lane said, adding that Jewell, the father, was acquainted with the man who was shot. "Basically they intended to go there to rob the victim. They were let inside, then everything went sideways."
According to Sergeant David Pocklington with the Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Station, a witness was able to puncture a tire on the suspects’ vehicle. A responding deputy was able to hear the sound of a vehicle driving on a flat tire from a distance away, broadcasting this information to additional units.
Lane clarified, "A witness who was in the house when the shooting happened ran out and popped a tire with a knife or something sharp."
A high-risk vehicle stop was made at the intersection of Lemon Grove and North Avenues, Jewell, 49, and Wineski, 22, were positively identified by witnesses and taken into custody. Two firearms were recovered in the vehicle.
The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by paramedics to Sharp Memorial Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. The Victim is currently listed in critical condition.
The motive appears to have been robbery, according to Sergeant Pocklington. Detectives from the Lemon Grove Station are investigating this shooting. Their investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information on this crime should contact (619)337-2000.
