January 21, 2012 (La Mesa) -- Next week, the Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) and the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Boards will hear action items on the development of community gardens on school district properties, including Helix Charter High School in La Mesa as well as schools in San Carlos and San Diego.

San Diego Roots, an organization which supports community gardens, is encouraging the public to attend meetings January 26 for the GUHSD and January 24 for the SDSUSD to show support for the gardens, which would benefit community residents as well as students.

The GUHSD School Board will vote on whether to pass a joint use agreement with the City of La Mesa to establish a community garden at the site of Helix Charter High School on Thursday, January 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the East County Regional Education Center (924 East Main Street, El Cajon, CA 92020).

The SDUSD School Board will hear Board Resolution H-6 to determine whether to explore the development of community gardens on school district property on Tuesday, January 24 at 5 p.m. in Room 2226 at the Eugene Brucker Education Center, located at 4100 Normal Street, San Diego, CA 92103. This resolution will impact whether the school-community garden pilot projects at Montgomery Middle School (in partnership with Bayside Community Center) and Springall Academy (in partnership with San Carlos United Methodist) can continue to plan for the establishment of a school-community garden on district property.
