February 20, 2019 (El Cajon) – The Olaf Wieghorst Museum at the Wieghorst Western Heritage Center, 131 Rea Ave., El Cajon, will present a free lecture about Native American Pueblo Storyteller pottery from 1 to 2 p .m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. The public is invited to attend.
Speaker will be Craig Helm of Helm Auction, Inc. Helm operates an online auction, appraisal and brokerage service specializing in Native American and tribal artifacts. Helm, with a degree in archaeology from San Diego State University, has been listed twice on the “Who’s Who in Indian Relics” list.
In his lecture, Helm will discuss the work of Helen Cordero (1915-1994), who was a Cochiti Pueblo potter from Cochiti, New Mexico. Cordero is credited with inventing the storyteller pottery figurines motif based on the traditional “singing mother” style. Her work can bes found in the Museum of International Folk Art and New Mexico Museum of Art, as well as the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and Heard Museum in Phoenix.
