April 29, 2024 (El Cajon) – A pilot suffered moderate injuries after a single-engine Bellanca Super Viking plane crashed Sunday evening onto a sidewalk in the vicinity of Lily Avenue and Clarke Drive in El Cajon. The accident also knocked down power lines, causing an outage in the neighborhood to about 1,000 customers, according to SDG&E. No homes were struck and nobody else was injured.
The small plane was flying to Gillespie Field in El Cajon, according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.
Sean McGurrey, another pilot in the air nearby, told ECM news partner 10 News that he heard the troubled plane’s pilot report a drop in oil pressure and a rise in oil temperature, a situation that would require an emergency landing.
The El Cajon Police Department is coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate the cause of the crash.
