May 27, 2015 (San Diego)--San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park Announces Poetry From the River on June 6th with Poet Jim Moreno. The event includes a guided walking tour, poetry workshop, and star party.

Mission Trails Regional Park CEO Jay Wilson announces the    news of Poetry From the River, an afternoon and evening at Mission Trails Regional Park,  Two Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego, CA, 92119, for participants 12 years old and up Saturday, June 6, 2015, 3:30 P.M. To 9:00 P.M. At Kumeyaay Lake Campground.

Poetry From the River begins with a guided walking tour of Mission Trails Regional Park at 3:30 P.M. A tour guide will discuss the flora and fauna as well as the history of the area.  At 5:15 P.M. San Diego poet Jim Moreno will lead a two hour poetry writing workshop on the love of nature.  After a short break Poetry From the River participants will join the San Diego Astronomy Association for a Star Party, aka star gazing, with a variety of telescopes.

Imagine writing your own original poetry from Moreno's prompts which include poetry by  Mary Oliver, Robinson Jeffers, Joy Harjo, N. Scott Momaday,  Octavio Paz, Sandra Cisneros, William Stafford & others. Poetry From The River poems will be composed  in the heart of 5,800 acre Mission Trails Regional Park.  The rugged hills, valleys and open areas are part of the traditional homeland of the First Americans, the Kumeyaay Nation. 

Art and community in Southern California have enjoyed a rich history with the Kumeyaay of San Diego County, the Coso People of the Northern Edge of the Mojave Desert, and, Moreno's tribe, the  Chumash of the Channel Islands and South Central Coastal California put paint to brush & rock   Join Jim the Poet & put verse to pen & paper for this afternoon & evening of exploring, creativity, and star gazing in the great outdoors.  The fee for the event is $25.  Sign up at https://apm.activecommunities.com/sdparkandrec/Activity_Search/11114

Jim Moreno is on the Advisory Board of the Poetic Medicine Institute of Palo Alto, California and a Regional Editor of the San Diego Poetry Annual. He is a Teaching Artist with Young Audiences of San Diego  &  the Poet-in-Residence for the Juvenile Court & Community Schools.   Moreno is the author of “Dancing In Dissent”, (Dolphin Calling Press, 2007) and two cd's of music and poetry.  He hosts “2nd Tuesday— Jihmye Poetry” at the Cafe Cabaret on Adams Ave., and is in post production for his radio show “Poetry Is Political”  to be aired on  KNSJ, 89.1 FM & KNSJ.org.
