October 3, 2011 (San Diego)—Investigators have identified Enrique Ayon, 24, as a person of interest who may be involved in or have information pertaining to a series of freeway shootings this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol. Ayon’s vehicle is a white 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, CA license 5POM917. He is Hispanic, 5’8”, 190 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If you have information on Ayon or see him or his vehicle, call 911 immediately.

The shooting spree began at around 10:30 a.m., when a vehicle on I-805 northbound at Plaza Blvd. was pierced by a bullet; no one was injured in that incident. A second shooting wounded a motorist in the thigh at the Mesa College exit on I-805. Later, bullet holes were shot through the side of an ambulance from Lemon Grove on I-5 north in Del Mar.

Motive is unknown and authorities believe the victims were randomly targeted. The incidents resulted in shut-down of I-805 and later, I-5 during today's investigation, causing major traffic headaches for commuters.

The vehicle was also reportedly involved in a hit-and-run accident in San Ysidro near the border shortly before the shooting series began.
