May 1, 2024 (Ramona) -- Ramona residents who need a ride to shop for groceries, visit a doctor or a cultural event, will soon have a shuttle service with electric vehicles powered by the sun.

A $10 million grant to the Ramona Community Center/Ramona Senior Center has been approved to cover the first four years of the shuttle, which is expected to feature electric-powered vans and a new shuttle garage, solar panels and meeting space at the center, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The grant is from the California Strategic Growth Council. The grant partners include the Ramona Water District along with the Ramona Senior Center, the Ramona Junior Fair, and FACT, or Facilitating Access to Transportation, the shuttle provider.

Rose LaRosa came up with the idea for a shuttle, after moving to Ramona from Cleveland, which had more accessible transit. Her vision was to bring transportation to seniors, the disabled and disadvantaged communities.

Organizers hope the shuttle service will be up and running by the end of this year, once infrastructure is installed including charging stations. Long-range, they hope to extend the shuttle service to serve hikers and visitors at Mt. Woodson who want to visit Ramona for shopping or dining.

SUSTAINABLE SHUTTLE SERVICE

Powered by the sun? Really? I doubt it; only some fraction of the electrical needed to charge the batteries will be solar. Please, supply some technical details...
