August 6 (Tuesday, 7:30 pm) — Warwick's will host sportscaster Mel Proctor, who will discuss and sign his memoir I Love the Work, But I Hate the Business. This event is free and open to the public. In order to be signed I Love the Work, But I Hate the Business must be purchased from Warwick's.

Background: "I love the work, but hate the business." Maybe you have said those words about your own job. But if you are a sportscaster, that phrase has probably become your mantra.

Known best as the longtime play-by-play voice of the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Bullets, Proctor also called games for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and Washington Nationals in Major League Baseball and the New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA. Proctor has also enjoyed a long career as a network broadcaster, calling the NFL and college basketball for NBC; college basketball for CBS; the NBA, college football, the boxing for Turner Sports, and baseball for Fox.

Relating never before heard anecdotes, Proctor introduces us to sports icons, including Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Cal Ripken, Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, Bernard King, Frank Robinson, Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Tony Gwynn, Ken Caminiti, Rick Pitino, Paul Hornung, and Junior Seau.

August 8 (Thursday, 6:30 pm to midnight) — Stars at the Star present a Poetry and Live Music event every Thursday. No cover but a 2-drink minimum (at 8 pm -- includes food). The poet this week is Sonia Gutierrez and the musicians are the Manny Cepeda trio.

August 8 (Thursday, 6:00 to 7:30 pm) — Adventures by the Book, in partnership with the Lawyers Club of San Diego, presents a Runaway Girl Cocktail Reception with author, attorney, motivational speaker, youth advocate, and CEO of Runaway Girl FPC Carissa Phelps at Latham & Watkins LLP, 600 W. Broadway, Suite 1800, San Diego 92101. This is a ticketed event open to the public with discounts available to Lawyers Club members, Latham & Watkins, UCLA School of Law Alumni, League of Women Voters, and Women Give San Diego members. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event and also for purchase to donate to the Lindsay Community Day School, which supports teen moms and pregnant teens.

About the Book and Author: After running away from an abusive home, living on the streets, and being forced into prostitution, not even juvenile hall or group homes could help Carissa Phelps find the light at the end of a dark tunnel. At the age of 14, the threat of prison finally gave her perspective and, with the help of a devoted social worker and teacher who risked her job to encourage Carissa, she finally escaped the sex-trafficking industry, and she went on to graduate from UCLA with both a law degree and an MBA.

Runaway Girl is the inspiring story of Carissa’s life, about finding the courage to run toward healing, and summoning the strength to light the way for others. She is currently the CEO of Runaway Girl, FPC, a California Flexible Purpose Corporation that aims to create employment and career development opportunities for former runaways, survivors of abuse, neglect, trauma, and human trafficking.

August 10 (Saturday, 10:00 am) — Adventures by the Book, in partnership with Girl Scouts San Diego and Fixtures Living, presents a Desserts in Jars Adventure with Fixtures Living Executive Chef Bridget at Fixtures Living, 9340 Dowdy Drive, Suite 102, San Diego 92126. This is a ticketed event ($20) open to registered Girl Scouts and includes a book and a Campfire Bars dessert in a jar activity .

About the Book: Desserts in Jars is a charming cookbook that includes 50 inventive ideas full of sugar and spice and a whole lot else that is nice, from cobblers and custards to cupcakes and creme brulees, all presented beautifully in a jar. Some of the desserts are baked right in the jar, while others use the jar as an easy and elegant serving dish. For gift-giving, there is a special chapter devoted to mixes with dry ingredients attractively layered in the jar.

August 11 (Sunday, 1:00 to 3:00 pm) — Adults are invited to attend a free discussion and signing by Vicki Higgins and Mandy Berlin, authors of No Mistakes! How You Can Change Adversity into Abundance.

August 12-18 — Adventures by the Book presents an Alaskan Adventure by the Book with award-winning author and photographer, and internationally-renowned Alaskan wilderness guide Lynn Schoole. Event includes six nights’ lodging in the author’s home, a small, handcrafted cabin influenced by traditional Japanese architecture and located 25 miles north of Juneau in the Alaskan wilderness, informal, dorm-style Japanese tatami sleeping arrangements , all meals, most activities, a signed copy of the author’s book, and transportation to and from the Juneau airport (limitations may apply). Because of the exclusive nature of this adventure, the package is open to only 4-6 participants.

August 13 (Tuesday, 7:30 pm) — Warwick's will host the founder and CEO of http://www.CaringBridge.org, Sona Mehring, as she discusses and signs Hope Conquers All. Background: In 1997, Sona Mehring created the first CaringBridge website when a close friend endured a life-threatening pregnancy. CaringBridge is now used by over 500,000 people a day, with 44 million unique visitors over the past year. Through CaringBridge, Mehring has witnessed thousands of stories of hope and connection among people struggling with stroke, cancer, and other life-changing conditions. Hope Conquers All shares some of its most touching stories.
