February 17 (Monday, 7:00,pm) — Thirty-Fifth Annual St. Patrick's Day Open Reading of Irish Poetry and Prose: Members of the public are invited to read from their favorite selections of James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, Edmund Burke, Sean O'Casey et al., on Monday from 7 P.M. until it ends, 17 March 2014, at D.G.Wills Books, 7461 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, 858-456-1800, www.dgwillsbooks.com. Messrs. Guinness and Harp will officiate the proceedings.

February 19 (Wednesday, 4:30 pm) — MONICA MODY's KALA PANI just came out from 1913 Press. Mody has published three chapbooks of poetry and cross-genre experiments, and her writing has appeared in The Harper Collins Book of English Poetry, &Now Awards 2: The Best Innovative Writing, Boston Review, The Volta, iARTistas, and Paragraphiti, among other places. Mody is a contributor to Montevidayo.

SAWAKO NAKAYASU writes and translates poetry, and also occasionally creates performances and short films. Her most recent books are THE ANTS (Les Figues, forthcoming 2014) and a translation of Sagawa Chika's COLLECTED POEMS (Canarium Books, forthcoming 2014). Other books include TEXTURE NOTES (Letter Machine Editions, 2010), HURRY HOME HONEY (Burning Deck, 2009), and MOUTH: EATS COLORSAGAWA CHIKA TRANSLATIONS, ANTI-TRANSLATIONS and ORIGINALS, which is a multilingual work of both original and translated poetry. She has received fellowships from the NEA and PEN, and her own work has been translated into Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, Arabic, Chinese, and Vietnamese. February 21 (Friday, 7:00 pm) — People's Choice Poem Performance, featuring poet Jerrica Escoto and Gill Sotu at the Museum of the Livingt Artist, 1439 El Proao, Balboa Park.

February 21 (Friday, 7:00 pm) — UCSD Bookstore, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, will host Uri Gneezy, author of The Why Axis: Hidden Motives and the Undiscovered Economics of Everyday Life.

February 22 (Saturday, 1:00 pm) — Susan elizabeth Phillips author of The Great Escape at Mysterious Galaxy, 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., Suite 302, San Diego.

February 22 (Saturday, 1:00 pm) — At the Civic Center Library, 330 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside. Alan Russelolo, Burning Man; Debra Ginsberg, What the Heart Remembers; Ken Kuhiken; The Biggest Liar in Los Angeles; and Lisa Brackmann, Hour of the Rat.

February 22 (Saturday, 3:00 pm) — Code name by Johnny Walker at Bay Books, 1029 Orange Ave., Coronado.

Saturday, February 22 (Saturday, 10:00 -12:30 pm) —  Publishers and Writers will meet at the Encinitas Community Center. The guest speaker is Angela Bole of the Independent Book Publishers Association. She'll be discussing How to Get the Most Out of Your Membership.

February 14-17 — The 28th annual Southern California Writers' Conference *San Diego takes place Presidents’ Day Weekend, Feb. 14-17, 2014. With some $4 million dollars worth of publishing success behind us, as always, our next event is geared to get you where you want to go with your work.

February 22 (Saturday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm) — Publishers and Writers of San Diego (PWSD) will hold its monthly meeting at the Encinitas Community Center. The topic for the meeting is “Stronger Together—Making the Most of Your Association Memberships” The presenter is Angela Bole, Executive Director of the Independent Book Publishers Association.

Anyone interested or involved in writing, editing, publishing, designing, or anything related to books is welcome to attend. Members cost $10, non-members $15. Visit www.PublishersWriters.org for more information and to register for the meeting.

February 24 (Monday, 6:30 pm) — At the monthly meeting of the San Diego Writer/Editors Guild, the featured speaker will be San Diego award-winning poet, critic, arts writer, lyricist and playwright  Charlene Baldridge who will speak on Writing as a Critic. A former SDW/EG board member, this outstanding arts writer (theater, music, opera) will discuss "My Writing Life and all it entails after all these years – where words have taken me, living with my daughter's (the late poet Laura Morefield) words and now entering my full, assured ripeness."

Her current arts reviews are published by Opera News online, also Performances Magazine, San Diego Uptown News, San Diego Downtown News and Gay San Diego and her popular arts blog may be found at charlenebaldridge.com . Her new poetry chapbook, The Rose in December is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press in March, 2014.

A Wilmette, IL native, Baldridge has lived in San Diego since 1962 and has been writing about the arts since 1979, also authoring a play, The Warrior's Duet, (a San Diego Fringe Festival production, 2013), and a travel book, San Diego, Jewel of the California Coast (Northland Publishing in 2004). Baldridge is editor of the chapbook, The Warrior's Stance. Her books have been set by American composer Jake Heggie (Dead Man Walking and Mob-Dick) and recorded by classical sopranos Frederica Von Stade and Susan Graham. She is currently writing a prose memoir and next May, "Winter Roses," Heggie's orchestrated song cycle featuring her work, will be performed by Camerata Pacifica in Ventura, Pasadena, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. You won't want to miss this distinguished writer's take on her amazingly rich life and its cultural impact.
