September 17 (Tuesday, 7:00 p.m.) — J. Michael Straczynski signs Becoming Superman. This is a ticketed event. Straczynski is a veteran comics and television writer whose name is celebrated in the industry, as well as a former journalist for the Los Angeles Times and Time. His comic book work includes The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Rising Stars, and the Superman: Earth One graphic novel, which spent 37 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Straczynski’s latest book, Becoming Superman, is a dazzling memoir of how the power of creativity and imagination helped him to overcome the horrors of his youth, dysfunctional family, murder, and a terrible secret.

September 17 (Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.) — Warwick's will host Meg Waite Clayton as she discusses and signs her new book, The Last Train to London. Meg Waite Clayton is a New York Times bestselling author of six novels, including Beautiful Exiles; the Langum Prize-honored The Race for Paris; The Language of Light, which was a finalist for the Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction (now the PEN/Bellwether); and The Wednesday Sisters, which was chosen as one of Entertainment Weekly's 25 Essential Best Friend Novels of all time.

As 1937 approaches, fifteen-year-old Stephan Neuman, the Jewish heir to a great chocolate-making fortune, has no interest in Vienna’s swirling tensions. September 18 (Wednesday, 7:00 p.m.) — Warwick’s & University of San Diego’s College Of Arts And Sciences present The Nickel Boys at the Shiley Theater, 5998 Alcala Park. This is a ticketed event.

Colson Whitehead is the author of nine books of fiction and non-fiction, including The Underground Railroad, which was a #1 New York Times bestseller and won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. A recipient of MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships, he lives in New York City.

A perfect follow-up and companion to The Underground Railroad, in The Nickel Boys Colson Whitehead recreates the horrors of segregation and the struggles of the Civil Rights movement as the backdrop for an emotionally charged and compulsively readable novel populated with deeply empathetic characters.

September 19 (Thursday, 6:30 p.m.) — Georgeanne Irvine, author and director of corporate publishing for San Diego Zoo Global Press, will give a behind-the-scenes look at the zoo’s new book publishing endeavor at the next program meeting for the San Diego Professional Editors Network (SD/PEN). Launched last year, San Diego Zoo Global Press is dedicated to publishing books that inspire children and adults to care about wildlife and conservation. The meeting will take place at in the San Diego Health Services Complex.

John Everson is a writer of horror and dark fantasy, having had 11 novels and more than 100 short stories published to date. His debut novel, Covenant, won a Bram Stoker Award for a First Novel and his sixth book, Night Where, was a Bram Stoker Finalist in 2013. The Devil’s Equinox, John’s latest novel, has been described as so powerful, so terrifying, so implacable in the evil it describes, that I could not stop reading.

September 21 (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.) — Join contributing writers Kazim Ali, Mahin Ibrahim, Blair Imani, and Randa Jarrar for a book discussion of Halal If You Hear Me, a new anthology of writings by Muslim writers from all walks of life including women, queer, nonbinary, and transgender authors; at the San Diego Central Public Library, 330 Park Blvd., San Diego.

Edited by Safia Elhillo and Fatimah Asghar, the collected poems, essays and other pieces in the work dispel the notion that there is one correct way to be a Muslim.

September 22 (Sunday, 2:00 p.m.) — T. Greenwood signs Keeping Lucy. Greenwood is an author of thirteen published novels, a photographer, and an instructor of creative writing at San Diego Writer’s Ink. She has won three San Diego Book Awards, had her story Bodies of Water become a finalist for the Lambda Foundation award, and has been honored with grants from several foundations and art councils. Her latest novel, Keeping Lucy, is the story of a mother’s love, and the lengths one would go for their children.

September 25 (Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.) — Warwick's will host Bruce Holsinger, in conversation with Dr. Seth Lerer, as he discusses and signs his new book, The Gifted School. Bruce Holsinger is a Professor of English at the University of Virginia and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Seth Lerer joined the UC San Diego Literature Department in January 2009 as Distinguished Professor and as Dean of Arts and Humanities.

September 26 (Thursday, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) — Chasing Centuries at the Arizona Archaeological Society-Verde Valley Chapter. Join author Ron Parker as he explores the depth and duration of human/agave co-evolution across the desert southwest, and discovers unusual agaves apparently associated with archaeological sites long since abandoned by residents of extinct ancient cultures. These agaves appear to be anthropogenic cultivars; living archaeological relics developed and planted by indigenous pre-Columbian Native Americans, and many are still growing exactly where they were planted hundreds of years ago.
