Dear Maryanne,

My mother and I purchased a home in Lemon Grove last year and it has been very quiet until recently. There is a lot of construction going on lately and the cars are being diverted past our home. We are now interested in finding solutions to creating a quiet and peaceful environment without moving.

Dear Thelma and Joy,

Here are a few ideas that may help you reclaim your peaceful home.

  1. Consider replacing your windows with double or triple pane glass. (This may also help with your energy costs. too.)
  2. Weather strip interior doors. (This may help with energy costs too.)
  3. Hang a tapestry or woven rug. Fabrics help to reduce noise.
  4. Consider replacing hollow interior doors with solid wood doors.
  5. Weather strip your windows.
  6. Paint your rooms with sound-absorbing paints. Inquire about this at Home Depot or Lowes.
  7. Install bookcases with lots of books. The books act as a noise buffer.
  8. Landscaping barriers such as hedges, or a decorative wall, can absorb sound.
