March 29, 2011 (San Diego)--Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) and Education Secretary Arne Duncan made a call for education reform, framing the issue in a national security context. The push for reform was at a recent press conference following a tour of an early childhood facility at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

“As a nation, we need to harness the same dedication and commitment our service members display every day – and put it toward our schools,” said Davis, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. “We already have the best military in the world. There is no reason why we can’t have the best schools in the world.”  Davis also serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, where she will be influential in proposing improvements to the education system.

Davis is working on legislation to advance reform efforts, including a bill to give teachers access to feedback to enhance their teaching skills.

Military leaders have vested interest in education reform. Data shows that about 75 percent of young adults are not able to join the military and that poor school performance is one of the leading reasons why many young adults cannot enlist.

Davis and Duncan were joined by Congressman Duncan D. Hunter, Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Clifford Stanley, Marine Corps Major General Anthony L. Jackson, Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Major General Melvin G. Spiese, Deputy Commanding General of I Marine Expeditionary Force, Major General James W. Comstock, and Superintendent William Kowba, San Diego Unified School District.
