April 13, 2013 (Lemon Grove) – A man with physical limitations was transported to UCSD Medical Center with mild injuries after escaping a  fire at a duplex in the 7200 block of Central Avenue in Lemon Grove. Two dogs also escaped the fire, but two cats were found deceased, overcome by smoke.

Red Cross will be assisting five adults and two children displaced in the fire, as well as the two dogs.

Firefighters from Heartland Fire were dispatched at 11:06 a.m. to the blaze, finding heavy smoke and fire at the rear of the duplex and the resident in the backyard in need of assistance.  Units from San Diego, Cal Fire and Chula Vista also responded to the two-alarm fire, bringing it under control within 20 minutes, Heartland Fire reports.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Three residences were damaged by the fire. Damage to the structures and contents for all three is estimated at $300,000.

Crews were able to limit the fire damage to the one duplex and the adjacent unit, and keep it from spreading to other units due to a well coordinated attack on the fire.
