March 17, 2012 (La Mesa) – Updated March 23, 2012 --  Last week, we ran a story indicating that SDG&E failed to notify hundreds of La Mesa homes and businesses of a planned outage March 2. Sam Chammas, owner of Riviera Supper Club, wich had a full restaurant and band playing when the lights went out, has now challenged SDG&E to “say sorry with a steak.”

Will SDG&E accept this rare invitation from the steakhouse owner, or consider the matter well done? ECM has asked SDG&E to respond and will publish the response when received. Meanwhile, here is Chammas’ sizzling statement:

“After initially stonewalling us and saying they mailed us a letter, SDGE has acknowledged their mistake. I have filed a claim with their claims department for losses from the outage,” Chammas said in an e-mail to ECM. “Compensating a small business for losses from their mistake is the easy part for SDGE. What would mean much more is for SDGE to come down to Riviera and offer a handshake and say sorry.”

He adds, “Let's grill a couple steaks and talk about ways to prevent this in the future "Say Sorry With A Steak" is my invitation.  Why can't a GIANT corporation offer personal apology when they make a mistake? Showing that SDGE cares about little folks is a message most San Diegans would like to hear—because many doubt it’s true,” he concluded.

SDG&E representative Alision Zaragosa, however, has issued this reply. “We actually did issue apology letters to everyone who lost power in La Mesa for the inconvenience.”  But she told ECM, there won’t be a meeting over steaks to smooth things out.  "Small businesses are able to file claims, and I believe the Riviera Supper Club has done that.”
