July 16, 2024 (Lakeside) – The County is in the early stages of design for the proposed roundabouts, which proposes to construct two new roundabouts in Lakeside, one along Riverford Road, and the other between North Woodside Avenue.

San Diego County’s Public Works Department invites residents to a community open house on July 24 from 5-8 p.m. to ask questions and learn about the proposed Riverford Road Roundabouts capital improvement project. The meeting will be held at the Lakeside Library, 12428 Woodside Ave. in Lakeside.

According to the County, key benefits include:

  • Improving traffic efficiency and circulation, as well as reducing congestion at these busy intersections;
  • Creating a “complete street” with new crosswalks, shared use pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, and improved lighting; and
  • Offsetting increased traffic from future development projects.

The proposed roundabouts have drawn colorful comments on social media, including a cautionary note from Amanda Young Rigby. “Ahhh! A Drunk driving checkpoint,” she posted, recalling a drunk driver landing a pickup truck atop a fountain on the first day that a roundabout opened elsewhere.

Political pundit Barry Jantz quipped, “ In honor of Frank Hilliker and his family (owners of Hilliker’s Ranch Fresh Eggs), I don't think the Lakeside one should be round, I think it should be an egg-shaped-a-bout.”

El Cajon is in the later stages of building a roundabout on El Cajon Blvd. Will it work, or create more issues?

Round about waste of money.

How about maintaining what you already have? Repave the potholed "Jeep Trail" that is Lake Jennings Park Road and lower the dangerous 55 mile speed limit . After the idiots running this county turned a once quiet two lane country road into a major freeway connector between Hwy 52 /67 and I-8 . This road was NEVER designed for the amount of traffic / noise and congestion and numerous accidents and deaths it generates. Unincorporated El Cajon managed to repair and repave their portion of the road but the County of San Diego cannot get their heads out of their rear ends long enough to figure it out and complete the job on their end.
