December 3, 2018 (Poway) — The San Diego Academy of Horsemanship is announcing availability of its after school program. The program provides safe, educational and physically challenging activities for school-aged children in grades K-12 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. By providing a variety of ranch and equestrian activities and academic mentoring, the program offers enriched, relaxing, fun experiences.

We encourage each child to use their individual abilities to reach their full potential while gaining new experience for personal growth,” said Nicole Stone, owner of the San Diego Academy of Horsemanship. We aim to provide an atmosphere in which the child can learn, share and be a supportive member of a team as well as a team leader.

Students enrolled in the three-to-five day per week program develop skills through applying the knowledge learned at the after school program and by applying basic safety rules. As students care for the horses and equipment they learn the importance of dependability and responsible behavior.

The program assist students in achieving academic success by motivating students to analyze information by problem solving, asking questions, and determininganswers independently.

Students are taught to respe

ct all areas of the ranch. Around the barn and during class time, participants are required to learn safety requirements, as well as consideration for other riders, horses, equipment, facilities, and the authority of instructors.

Transportation – A unique aspect of the after school program is transportation to the ranch from local schools. Students within a 20-mile radius from Poway Unified School District (PUSD) and Scripps Ranch Schools are picked up from school and driven to the ranch at no additional cost. Drop off is available for children outside the pick-up radius that want to participate.

Self-Assurance – Self-reliance develops as students improve their riding skills. Success building confidence, which frequently spills over into other activities which students are involved in.

Enjoyment – Physically and mentally stimulating that leaves a participant feeling joyful and challenged.

Consideration and Respect – Clear communication between the horse and rider either verbal or nonverbal level is essential for an effective working relationship. Horseback riding is often a group activity that requiresstudents to have good communication with both peers and instructors.

Evaluative Skills – Progression in riding demands constant evaluation of students own skills and those of other riders by making judgements and decisions based on specific criteria.

Where applicable, students will grow academically through activities focusing on highlighted equine sports that will incorporate science, math, language arts and technology every day through the daily activities, drawing and research.

Students of the program have daily activities including homework assistance, learning to handle and care for horses both on the ground and in the saddle, horsemanship skills, horse safety, groundwork and communication.

The after school program also includes organized group and individual lessons, games, and trail rides and the following horse-related activities:

• Teaching horse knowledge around anatomy, health, show appearances
• Teaching horse care such as bathing, clipping, turn out and so much more.
• Ranch Maintenance

• Cooking for horses and humans

One (1) weekly horseback ride is included in the tuition during which students will learn Equitation in a level format where each principle builds on the next as well as learning halter, tack up and put horses away independently.  Additional ride time is available for those wanting more time with the horses.

Children who ride with PEC in the after school program for at least one (1) year will have the amazing opportunity to join them on a trip to observe wild horses in their natural habitats. The ranch will bring a wild horse to the ranch that the kids can “gentle.”
