October 10, 2019 (San Diego) -- Upcoming local literary happenings include some special events: a Poetry & Art Series and Adventures by the Book, plus a treasure trove of events for readers and for writers.

SPECIAL EVENTS

October 18 (Friday) — Poetry & Art Series 2019 at the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) features authors Emily Gao, Bethel Swift, Andy Palasciano, Pat Andrus, Chris Nelson, and Christophver R. Open mic Poetry Karaoke with creators Judy Reeves and Steve Montgomery completes this evening of poetry, music, and visual art in the gallery at SDAI. Hosted by Michael Klam. DJ Gill Sotu will provide music and sound throughout the show.

This interactive arts and culture experience will include beverages, snacks and time to mingle. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Members are free, nonmembers $6 at the door. October 19 (Saturday, 2:30 pm) — Adventures by the Book® is pleased to announce our upcoming Fall 2019 Literary Tea Adventure with international and New York Times bestselling authors, Sarah McCoy at The Westgate Hotel, 1055 Second Ave San Diego CA 92101. The event is ticketed ($65 per person) and is open to the public.

October 29 (Tuesday 11:00 am) — Adventures by the Book® is excited to partner with the OSHER Institute at SDSU for our upcoming The Unsung Heroes of WWII OSHER Edventure with local and critically acclaimed author Robin Hutton at 11:00am at the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park, Chapel Rd. San Diego, CA 92101. This event is ticketed, with tickets on sale soon through OSHER, and is open to OSHER students.

 

Robin Hutton has spent her adult life working in major event productions and the motion picture business. She is the co-author of The 9 Indispensable Ingredients in Every Hit Film, TV Show, Play, and Novel and was the writing and producing partner of Tom Laughlin (the legend of Billy Jack fame) for over thirty years.

November 2 (Saturday) — Adventures by the Book® is pleased to announce that New York Times bestselling author Patricia Schultz will be speaking at this year’s Successful Aging Expo at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W Harbor Dr. San Diego, CA 92101. Grace Talusan is the author of the memoir, The Body Papers (forthcoming April 2019), winner of the 2017 Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing for Nonfiction. 54th Annual Local Author Showcase!

Did you publish a book or ebook in 2019? If the answer is yes, and if you reside in San Diego County (zip codes 91901-92199), YOU ARE INVITED to participate in the upcoming 54th Annual Local Author Showcase!



As the crowning ceremony that launches the Local Author Program, the Showcase offers our published authors and guests a first look at the books accepted into the program. The event will run the entire month of February 2020 in the beautiful San Diego Central Library @ Joan ? Irwin Jacobs Common. The library features a special component for Little Local Authors, ages 11 and under. Teen Local Authors between 12 and 18 years old are also featured in the Local Author Showcase. All qualified authors will receive an invitation which will be sent separately after the registration process has concluded. LAST DAY TO REGISTER AND SUBMIT YOUR BOOK IS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2019 – ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS. If your book is not ready and printed by this date it does not qualify.

October 28 — SDWEG General Meeting, A CELEBRATION OF BOOKS with Dr. Richard Lederer.

Union-Tribune language columnist and recent winner of an Odin Award, Richard Lederer will offer a hymn of praise to the writing art. Along the way, he'll illuminate the life of Isaac Asimov, the most prolific author in American history.
