July 10, 2011 (San Diego) -- San Diego Police Gang Unit detectives have arrested 18 year old Anthony Penn and a 16 year old juvenile for a shooting that occurred yesterday in the Emerald Hills neighborhood. Two victims, 21 year old Martin Barnett, who was confronted by the suspects, and 7 year old Laura Castello, an innocent bystander who was playing in her yard nearby, were wounded. Both victims are expected to survive their injuries.

Yesterday, at approximately 1:49 p.m., the two suspects confronted Martin Barnett on 900 56th Street. Words were exchanged and the 16 year old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at Barnett. Two rounds struck Barnett in his upper arms. One round struck 7 year old Laura Castello in the leg. Barnett and Castello were transported by paramedics for treatment.

Gang Unit detectives responded to the scene and, during the initial investigation, identified Anthony Penn as the companion of the shooter during this incident. Penn had returned to the scene after the shooting and was taken into custody.

Detectives developed information about the identity of the second suspect who fired the shots that wounded the two victims. This suspect, a 16 year old juvenile, was arrested without incident at his San Diego home last night at about 7:10 p.m., by Gang Suppression Team officers and Gang detectives. Both suspects were booked for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and participation in a criminal street gang.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the San Diego Police Gang Unit at (619) 531-2847.
