Justin Hastings ties for 17th to lead Aztecs

May 18, 2022 (Norman, Okla.) - The San Diego State men’s golf team had its season come to an end with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Norman Regional at 9-over-par 873. The Aztecs collectively shot a 2-over 290 on the par-72, 7,452-yard Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club in today’s final round but finished 13 shots behind Utah for fifth place and the region’s final spot into the NCAA Championships slated for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Playing on its own course, top-seeded Oklahoma was the top team at 26-under 838 thanks to a 12-under 276 on Wednesday. The other four advancing teams are No. 18 Auburn (-16), No. 25 Ole Miss (-15), No. 7 Texas (-12) and No. 50 Utah (-4). No. 24 South Carolina (+2) and No. 36 Louisville (+7) also beat No. 48 SDSU (+9).

 

San Diego Stated finished with a pair of team titles on the year, including repeating at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic (April 4-5) and the Mountain West Championship (April 29-May 1).

 

Freshman Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) tied for 17th out of 75 golfers to lead SDSU at 1-under 215. Opening with a 3-over 75 on Monday, Hastings went 70-70 for the weekend. Hastings recorded four birdies on the day, including the par-4, 331-yard fourth, the par-3, 190-yard 12th, the par-5, 594-yard 13th and the par-5, 586-yard 18th, and three bogeys.

 

Senior Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) fired a 2-under 70 in today’s round and finished in a tie for 28th overall at 3-over 219. Jin, who went 77-72 in the first two rounds, was at 2-over through seven holes, but went 4-under the rest of the way with five birdies and a lone bogey. His birdies came on the par-5, 600-yard eighth, both No. 10 (par-4, 322 yards) and No. 11 (par-4, 445 yards), No. 13 and the par-4, 425-yard 16th.

 

Senior Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) finished in a tie for 40th at 6-over 222 following a 4-over 76 today. Sugimoto birdied the par-4, 331-yard third and the 18th but also had four bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 443-yard 14th.

 

Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) tied for 52nd at 9-over 225. Guezzale’s lone birdie came on the eighth, which was sprinkled in with four bogeys and 13 pars on the day.

 

Freshman Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) made his postseason debut in the final round, shooting a 3-over 75. Lague was at even par through 16 holes with birdies on the third and 12th, and a pair of bogeys, but bogeyed the par-4, 485-yard 17th and No. 18 to sign for a 75.

 

Jackson Suber (Ole Miss) captured medalist honors at 11-under 205, while Travis Vick (Texas) (-10) and J.M. Butler (Auburn) (-9) finished second and third, respectively.
