August 28, 2018 (Lakeside) – A woman jogging on North Woodside Avenue near Riverford Road in Santee was struck by a Chevy work truck driven by Michael Woodfill, 46, tonight at 6:40 p.m.

Susana Gotell, 41, was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major injuries, but died shortly after arrival.  She was the mother of two teens, ages 16 and 18, Fox 5 News reports.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the Chevy driver was heading eastbound when he allowed the truck to drive off the side of the roadway and strike a chain link fence. The driver over-corrected as he tried to return to the roadway and traveled across both eastbound and westbound lanes, striking the jogger before descending down a dirt embankment, where it overturned.

Woodfill, the driver of the Chevy, remained at the collision scene and waited for emergency responders.  It was determined that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.  The driver was placed under arrest for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.  He was booked into San Diego County Jail.

He had previously been arrested on a DUI charge and was on probation at the time of the fatal crash.
