January 20, 2012 (Santee)—A Sheriff’s Deputy from the Santee Station tried to pull over a driver in a white Honda for a false registration in the 10000 block of Mission Gorge Road shortly before 3 p.m. today.

“The driver initially yielded, but as the deputy was getting out of his patrol car, the driver started backing up, ramming the patrol car,” said Melissa Aquino, public affairs officer with the Sheriff.

The momentum forced the open door against the deputy, causing a slight injury, Sgt. Curt Goldberg said. The driver sped off, striking a fire hydrant and severing the connection.

The driver got out of the car and ran away with the deputy in pursuit. People at a nearby shopping center blocked the suspect, cornering him between cars.  The deputy ran and tackled the man, who was taken into custody.

The suspect, Jerry Wright, 41, complained of chest pains and was taken fo a hospital for treatment. The deputy was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Authorities later found over an ounce of metamphetamine in the vehicle. After release from the hospital, Wright was booked into jail for felony assault on a deputy and possession of drugs.

The fire department is on its way to shut off the fire hydrant.
