September 14, 2019 (Riverside) - The Aztec cross country team competed in their first 6k of the season at the UC Riverside Invitational Saturday morning. SDSU finished in 11th place out of 19 schools and was led by Carlene Masar’s time of 21.51.7.

Masar, who finished in 48th place, was the top SDSU finisher for the second consecutive race and has now finished in the top two among SDSU runners in every race she has run.

Masar was followed by Renee Phillips, who crossed the finish line in 22:18.7, good for 64th place and a new career best in the 6k. Lauren Harper (78th) and Jessica Kain (82nd), running their first collegiate 6k, were the next Aztecs to finish, clocking in at 22:27.3 and 22:35.6 respectively.

Other Aztecs running Saturday morning included Paige Comiso (101st; 22:54.4), Isabelle Davis (140th; 24:11.3) and Naomi Smitham (153rd; 25.20.6).

The Aztecs were without three runners who were battling illness and/or injuries.

Three Aztecs who traditionally compete in mid-distance events in the track season ran the 5k Open competition that followed the 6k Invite. Sophomore Nyjari McNeil finished first among that group with a time of 19:47.8 (75th place). She was followed by Sakura Roberson (114th; 20:24.8) and freshman Sonja Andenmatten (127th; 20:38.9).
