November 1, 2016 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) - San Diego State sophomore kicker John Baron (Temecula, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the first weekly league accolade for Baron.

On the season, the Aztecs have now won a MW-high three special teams awards - kick returner Rashaad Penny and punter Tanner Blain - and two offensive honors - running back Donnel Pumphrey.

In a 40-13 SDSU win at Utah State on Friday night, Baron made a career-high four field goals, going 4-for-4 with a long of 43 yards, in rainy conditions. The four field goals tied a San Diego State record, are the most in a game in the MW this year and are tied for the sixth most in FBS play this season. His 16 total points also tied a school record for points by a kicker.

Baron, who made his field goals from 21, 41, 43 and 23 yards, also made all four of his PATs. Additionally, Baron kicked off eight times for 508 yards, averaging 63.5 yards per boot with two touchbacks. On his eight kickoffs, his opponents averaged starting at the 20.3-yard line.

On the season, Baron is nearly perfect so far, going 31-for-31 in PATs and 10-for-11 (.909) in field goal attempts. Among the league leaders, Baron ranks second in the MW (ninth nationally) in field goal percentage (.909), third (39th nationally) in field goals per game (1.25), eighth (70th nationally) in points per game (7.63) and third in scoring among kickers (7.63). Baron, who also has kicked off 51 times for 3,228 yards (63.3 avg.), posting 13 touchbacks, has made eight straight field goals.

Winners of four consecutive games, 15 straight against conference opponents and 17 of its last 18 contests, San Diego State (7-1, 4-0 MW) plays host to Hawai‘i (4-5, 3-2 MW) at 4 p.m. PT Saturday.
