May 14, 2012 (San Diego) -- Nearly 10,000 San Diego State University students approved to participate in commencement ceremonies later this month are taking their degrees to new heights, with plans to live up to the university’s motto of “Leadership Starts Here.”

"We are extremely proud of our graduates," said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman, who will preside over his first commencement ceremonies at SDSU. "We send our heartiest congratulations to our graduates, their families and our faculty and staff members who supported and mentored this year's graduates. We know these graduates will continue our tradition of providing leadership to our region, our nation and our world."

Student Examples

Among the degree candidates is first-generation college student Levi Lentz. Lentz, 22, is the first SDSU engineering student to be elected into all five all-disciplinary honor societies. As an undergraduate, he won the Italian Machine Tool Design Award from the Italian Trade Commission and performed research into manufacturing systems— all while paying his own way through college. The mechanical engineering major and College of Engineering valedictorian will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology next semester to pursue a master’s degree in mechanical engineering en route to a Ph.D.

Lindsey Goulet came to SDSU through the Compact for Success program, a partnership between SDSU and the Sweetwater Union High School District designed to offer students guaranteed admission to the university. Inspired to create a positive change in her community, Goulet decided the best way to carry on the legacy of empowerment given to her by her high school teachers was to become an educator herself. Goulet will earn her bachelor’s degree in Social Science and plans to pursue a teaching credential in high social science and physics. Ultimately, she hopes to find a teaching position in the South County so she can give back to the community that inspired her.

2012 graduating class

Lentz and Goulet are just two of the 9,973 students approved to participate in SDSU commencement ceremonies May 17–20. Among them are 6,954 bachelor’s degree candidates (figures adjusted for double majors), 2,740 master’s degree candidates and 164 doctoral degree candidates. In addition, 266 bachelor's degree candidates and 19 master’s degree candidates will participate in commencement ceremonies at SDSU’s Imperial Valley campus Thursday, May 17.
