March 12, 2022 (San Diego) - The Aztec lacrosse team (2-4) fell to No. 10 Princeton (5-0) 27-18 in a high-scoring shootout at the Aztec Lacrosse Field Saturday afternoon.

Goalkeeper Sam Horan faced 58 shots and made a school record 21 saves. Deanna Balsama, who leads the nation in goals per game, scored eight goals, tying the school record she set in SDSU’s last game and dished out two assists. Her 10 points tied for the most in school history.

The Aztecs stuck with the Tigers in the first half and trailed just 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and 14-11 at the half, but Princeton scored seven of the first eight goals in the third quarter and held a comfortable lead for the rest of the way.

Princeton outshot the Aztecs 58-34 and 48-28 in shots on goal. They also had a 29-20 advantage in draw controls.

Outside of Balsama’s eight goals, Camdyn O’Donnell had four and an assist. Brook Waddell had two goals and an assist and Mia Kohn netted two. Captains Bailey Brown and Cailin Young each scored a goal.

Bailey Brown, SDSU’s all-time leader in career draw controls, had a team-high eight. Horan led the team with six ground balls.

Princeton’s Nina Montes led the Tigers with five goals, and they had three players score four times. Marge Donovan had 11 draw controls and goalkeeper Sam Fish had 10 saves.

Deanna Balsama has 19 points on 16 goals and three assists over her last two games.

THE NOTE II

The Aztecs have scored 18 goals in back-to-back games, their first time doing this since scoring 20 and then 18 against Bucknell and then LIU Brooklyn in 2019.
