March 16, 2022 (San Diego) - The Aztec lacrosse team (3-4) knocked off Marquette (4-5) 18-12 Tuesday afternoon, their third straight game with 18 goals. Seven Aztecs scored and SDSU was led by Camdyn O’Donnell who netted a career-high seven goals.

“It was great to get our first home win of the year and everyone on the team contributed,” O’Donnell said after the game. “Our entire offense stepped up because they were face guarding Deanna [Balsama] so we were looking for different ways to score. Overall, it was a really good team win.”

The first half was full of runs. SDSU scored three goals in the first 2:15, with two coming from O’Donnell, and then Marquette scored four straight over a four-minute span. The Aztecs then responded with six unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead with 9:49 left in the second quarter.

The Golden Eagles then outscored SDSU 4-2 in the remainder of the second quarter. SDSU scored the first three goals of the third quarter and then led by at least four goals for the remainder of the game.

Scoring for both sides slowed down in the second half and SDSU held Marquette to two goals in both the third and fourth quarter.

Outside of O’Donnell’s seven goals, Courtney Robinson and Cailin Young each had a pair of goals and two assists, Bailey Brown, Deanna Balsama, Brook Waddell each scored two goals and Julia Lytle scored once.

Goalkeeper Sam Horan had 18 saves, the second-most in her career.

The Aztecs outshot the Golden Eagles 42-31 and 32-30 in shots on goal. They also had an advantage in caused turnovers (16-11) and ground balls (25-23).

Marquette had six players score and was led by Elise Smigiel’s three. Goalkeeper Amanda Rumsey had 14 saves.
