March 26, 2017 (San Diego) - After SDSU lacrosse notched a big win on Friday night against St. Mary's, ECM returned to Aztec Lacrosse Field on Sunday afternoon when the Aztecs took on the Cal Golden Bears.

Contrary to Friday night, the Aztecs had a tough time getting started.  This allowed Cal to take the lead 1-0 on a goal by freshman attacker Susie Ropp.  But that wasn't a big deal for Kristen Hickey.  The senior midfielder tied it up at one apiece.  Seconds later, SDSU took the lead on a goal by senior midfielder Alex Watson and led 2-1.  But Ropp erased that lead a minute later and tied the game at two.  The sticks stayed calm for a while until senior midfielder Kayla Deitz gave the Aztecs the 3-2 lead again with 17 minutes left in the first half.  Sophomore midfielder Harlowe Steele gave the Aztecs a 4-2 cushion.  From there, the Aztecs kept upping the ante; freshman midfielder Morgan Taylor increased the lead to 5-2.  Steele scored her second of the game to make it 6-2.  Cal broke the run on a goal by senior attacker Elizabeth Pellechi to make the score 6-3.  Pellechi was a one-woman show, narrowing the lead to two 30 seconds later to make it 6-4.  Hickey stopped the one-woman explosion with her second of the game to make it 7-4 Aztecs.  Deitz scored her second just before halftime to give the Aztecs an 8-4 lead going to the locker room.

Cal slowly crept back in the second half.  Pellechi began the half with a hat trick to make the score 8-5.  Senior attacker Jena Fritts made it 8-6, but Deitz and senior midfielder Ijeoma Ikpe stopped the bleeding and gave the Aztecs a nice cushion with two goals and a hat trick for Deitz to make it 10-6 SDSU.  Freshman midfielder Taylor Sullivan joined in on the scoring and made it 11-6 Aztecs.  Pellechi notched her fourth with a sweet sidearm to make the score 11-7 Aztecs.  Junior midfielder Meredith Haggerty stormed downfield and potted the goal that put the Bears within three with 18 minutes left.  The Aztecs still led 11-8.  Cal kept rallying; they narrowed it to two on a goal from junior attacker Parker Garrett.  The Aztecs held onto their 11-9 lead by their fingertips.  And before they knew it, they were within one.  Fritts made it 11-10 with 11 minutes left.  And two minutes later, the game was tied at 11.  Redshirt freshman Kirsten Swanson scored the equalizer.  With three minutes left, Haggerty scored the golden goal that gave the Bears the 12-11 lead, their first lead of the game.  Cal went up by two on a goal from junior midfielder Chloe Landry and led 13-11, their biggest lead of the game.  But the Aztecs weren't dead yet.  Watson scored to make it 13-12.  And with 38 seconds to spare, SDSU tied the game on Sullivan's goal and we were knotted again at 13 and headed to overtime.

SDSU and Cal played two overtimes before Watson became the hero in double overtime, running downfield and putting the ball in the net to give the Aztecs the 14-13 win.  SDSU improves to 7-3 overall and to 2-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.

SDSU takes a weeklong break, but it will be back in action on Friday against Brown at Aztec Lacrosse Field.  Match time is set for 5:00 p.m.
