Guezzale ties for 23rd; Aztecs take 14th

March 19, 2022 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men’s golf team finished 14th at Arizona’s National Invitational Tournament Saturday at the par-72, 7,200-yard Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona.

The Aztecs carded a 5-over-par 293 in Saturday’s final round and finished the 54 holes at 6-over 870, four shots ahead of UNLV (+10). Second-ranked Oklahoma State won the 15-team event in a tournament-record score of 811 (-53), easily outdistancing No. 12 Texas (-32), No. 9 Pepperdine (-28), No. 1 Oklahoma (-27) and No. 30 Arizona (-26), among others.

 

Youssef Guezzale finished in a 11-way tie for 23rd out of 88 entrants at 4-under 216 following a 1-under 71 in today’s final round. Starting on the 10th hole, Guezzale rallied from a 2-over start through five holes by birdieing four of the final 11 holes he played, including the par-3, 186-yard 17th, the par-5, 535-yard second, the par-4, 398-yard fifth and the par-4, 425-yard sixth. His lone bogey over his final 11 holes was the par-3, 170-yard fourth.

 

Puwit Anupansuebsai finished in a tie for 53rd at 1-over 217 with a final round 2-over 74. Anupansuebsai bogeyed the par-5, 511-yard 10th, then had 16 consecutive pars before another bogey on the par-4, 436-yard ninth.

 

Steve Sugimoto tied for 70th at 4-over 220 after a 1-over 73 today. Sugimoto’s birdies on the par-5, 610-yard 15th and No. 2 were offset by three bogeys.



Jack Townsend tied for 80th at 8-over 224 with his second straight 76. Townsend sank birdies on the 10th and the fourth, but also had six bogeys.

 

Jackson Moss finished in solo 84th at 10-over 226 following a 75 today. Moss birdied the par-4, 430-yard 11th and No. 6, but had three bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-5, 587-yard eighth.

 

Oklahoma State’s Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra fired a final-round 64 to capture medalist honors at 20-under 196, breaking the previous tournament record by three strokes.

 

San Diego State will look to defend its Wyoming Cowboy Classic title April 4-5 at Whirlwind Golf Course in Chandler, Arizona.
