August 24, 2021 (San Diego) -  San Diego State men’s golf head coach Ryan Donovan announced the team’s 2022 schedule Tuesday, with the Aztecs slated to compete in 10 regular-season tournaments leading up to the Mountain West Championship, regional competition and the NCAA Championship.

SDSU is coming off another successful season where it tied for 25th at the 2021 NCAA Championship and completed its season with two team victories, seven top-5 finishes and three individual titles.

San Diego State is scheduled for four tournaments in the fall, beginning with the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Sept. 10-12 at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Aztecs will be competing in the fifth annual event for the first time, which is hosted by Georgia State.

SDSU next competes in the Husky Invitational Sept. 20-21 in Bremerton, Wash. San Diego State will utilize its trip to Gold Mountain Golf Club as a preview for next spring’s Mountain West Championship, which will be held on the same course. The Aztecs finished sixth at the 2019 Husky Invitational in an event that was shortened to two rounds because of heavy rains in the Seattle area.

From Puget Sound, SDSU will make its way to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Colonial Collegiate Invitational, held at Colonial Country Club. It will be San Diego State’s first time competing in the event, hosted by TCU.

The Aztecs’ final autumn tournament will be played Oct. 18-20 at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at The Alotian Club in Roland, Ark. The Stephens Cup is making its debut in the 2021 fall season and played in honor of the late Augusta National Chairman, Jackson (Jack) T. Stephens. The exclusive invitational Stephens Cup will feature just eight NCAA Championship-contending teams.

SDSU kicks off its spring slate at the Southwestern Invitational Jan. 24-26 at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. San Diego State claimed last year’s event at 10-over-par 874 in a loaded field which set the tone for an impressive spring campaign where the Aztecs ranked in or near the top 25 for the rest of the season.

SDSU then makes its 12th consecutive appearance at The Prestige Feb. 21-23 at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. San Diego State will look to improve on a ninth-place finish a year ago after taking third in the 2020 version.

San Diego State will have two weeks to prepare for its sole home tournament of the 2022 campaign when it welcomes another highly competitive field for the 15th annual Lamkin San Diego Classic March 7-8 in Chula Vista, Calif. For the 13th time overall and 11th year in a row, historic San Diego Country Club will serve as the host venue for the nationally recognized tournament. The Aztecs were 12th in their home event last year following a second-place tie in the 2020 tournament.

SDSU next heads to Arizona’s National Invitational Tournament (NIT) March 18-19 at Omni Tucson National Golf Club. San Diego State finished an impressive fourth last year in an 18-team field which included 10 programs ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfstat rankings. The Aztecs fired a 29-under 835, edging No. 4 Illinois and No. 17 Arizona by a stroke, just two shots behind sixth-ranked Texas.

SDSU will look to defend its title the next time out at Wyoming’s Cowboy Classic April 4-5 at Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz. Bolstered by four top-20 finishes, including a runner-up showing by Puwit Anupansuebsai, San Diego State shot a 33-under 831 to win by six strokes over TCU.

Following the trip to the desert, the Aztecs will have one last tune-up before the conference tournament when they make their 11th consecutive trek to the Santa Cruz area for the Western Intercollegiate April 11-13 at scenic Pasatiempo Golf Club. SDSU came in third in the 74th Western Intercollegiate a year ago, led by Anupansuebsai, who lost in a playoff at 5-under 205.

The Mountain West Championship will take place at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. for the first time since 2018 when San Diego State came in a disappointing eighth place. The championship has been played at Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. 13 of the previous 14 years besides the 2018 version. Anupansuebsai is the reigning MW medalist, while the Aztecs tied for third.

This season's regional championships will be conducted over four days, May 15-18, at six different venues, including courses in College Station, Texas, Palm Beach, Fla., New Haven, Conn., Stockton, Calif., Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Columbus, Ohio. SDSU will be looking for their 22nd NCAA regional appearance over the last 23 chances (2020 NCAA regionals were canceled).

If the Scarlet and Black advances to the NCAA finals, it will make it four times in the last seven championships.  The finals are May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Last year, SDSU tied for 25th at the championship event.
