February 17, 2021 (La Quinta, Calif.) - The ninth-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team finished up play at The Prestige Wednesday on the par-71, 7,100-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. The Aztecs shot a 3-over 287 in the final round today and finished ninth out of 24 teams at 18-over 870.

Starting the day in a tie for 13th, SDSU moved up four spots in the final round with a pair of even-par 71s by seniors Puwit Anupansuebsai and Steve Sugimoto, a 1-over 72 by senior Zihao Jin and a 2-over 73 by junior Joey Moore.

No. 11 Arizona and North Carolina shared the team title at 4-under 848, followed by No. 5 Pepperdine (-3), No. 3 Arizona State (+2) and No. 17 SMU (+8).

Jin led San Diego State overall, tying for 17th for the tournament at 2-over 215 in a field where only eight players shot under par. Starting on the first hole, Jin totaled four birdies and three bogeys through 17 holes, but a double bogey on the par-4, 461-yard 18th hole dropped him from would have been a top-10 finish and even-par tournament.

Anupansuebsai, meanwhile, rebounded from a 6-over 77 on Tuesday for an even-par 71 in today’s final round. After a double bogey on the par-4, 477-yard third and the par-4, 481-yard sixth, and back-to-back pars, Anupansuebsai was lights out over the final 10 holes, going 3-under with four birdies and a bogey. He finished in a tie for 21st at 3-over 216, one shot back of Jin for 17th.

Sugimoto shot better than his previous round for the second straight day, going 75, 74 and 71, finishing tied for 53rd at +7. Sugimoto was 2-under through 10 holes in the third round but had a rough stretch of three consecutive bogeys on holes 12, 13 and 14. Sugimoto rebounded, however, with a birdie on the par-5, 537-yard 16th to get back to even-par for the day. He finished with four birdies and four bogeys today.

Moore’s 73 today gave him a tie for 72nd overall at +9. He offset his two bogeys and one double bogey with birdies on the sixth hole and the par-3, 180-yard 17th.

Junior Youssef Guezzale also was in the starting lineup for the Aztecs and tied for 108th at +17.

Individually, three players - Arizona's Trevor Werbylo, TCU’s Jacob Skov and Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg - shared medalist honors at 4-under 209.

Freshmen Jack Heath (Charlotte, N.C.) and Liam Koeneke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), meanwhile, also wrapped up their play at the Prestige Individual Tournament at Coral Mountain Golf Club on the par-72, 7,145-yard layout. Heath shot a 3-over 75 and finished in a tie for 14th at 2-under 214, while Koeneke’s 2-under 70 gave him a tie for 19th at -1.

The Aztecs will next co-host the Lamkin Invitational at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., from March 8-10.
