September 24, 2022 (Albuquerque) - The San Diego State men’s golf team claimed the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate by eight strokes Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Leading host New Mexico by five strokes heading into today’s final round, the Aztecs shot a 1-over 289 to finish at 16-under 848.

It was the fifth tournament win for SDSU since the spring 2021 season (San Diego State did not compete in the 2020 fall campaign because of COVID). The Aztecs started four underclassmen in the five-man lineup.

The only other schools under par on the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course were the Lobos (-8), UNLV (-6), TCU (-4) and Brigham Young (-3).

Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) was SDSU’s top finisher, tying for fifth out of 104 golfers at 6-under 210. Guezzale had a 1-under 71 today, including an eagle on the par-5, 544-yard 18th hole, three birdies and two double bogeys. Guezzale led all competitors with three eagles for the tournament, posting the second-best stroke average on the par-5s this weekend at -11.

Only Denver’s Carson Griggs (-11), UNLV’s Caden Fioroni (-10), New Mexico State’s Garrison Smith (-8) and New Mexico’s Albert Boneta (-7) bettered Guezzale (-6) for the tournament.

Freshman Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), meanwhile, tied for seventh at 5-under 211 following an even-par 72 today. Competing in the starting five for the first time of his career, Kowack sank six birdies in today’s final round, but was saddled with three double bogeys.

Sophomore Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) followed up his back-to-back 71s yesterday with a 72 today to finish in a tie for 14th at 2-under 214. Lague logged two birdies and two bogeys.

Freshman Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) tied for 23rd at 2-over 218 with a 2-over 74 today, while sophomore Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) tied for 30th at 3-over 219 following a 75 on Saturday.

Competing as an individual, Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) carded a 5-over 77 and finished in a tie for 53rd at 7-over 223.

The Aztecs will have a 16-day hiatus before making the trip to the Wolf Pack Intercollegiate at Hidden Valley C.C., from Oct. 10-11, in Reno, Nevada.
