October 5, 2021 (Fort Worth) - The San Diego State men’s golf team finished in a tie for 10th place in its most competitive tournament to date Tuesday at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational.

In a 15-team field which featured 12 programs that made the 2021 NCAA Championship last spring, including each of the last five NCAA champions and nine of the top-25 teams in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin team ratings, the Aztecs tied for 10th with USC at 31-over-par 871 on the par-70, 7,204-yard Colonial Country Club course. SDSU carded a final round 8-over 288 and finished eight strokes back of Vanderbilt (+23) for ninth, and ahead of Florida (+33), Oregon (+37), Clemson (+38) and Baylor (+42).

Individually, Zihao Jin (Beijing/Rancho Bernardo HS) tied for 28th out of 75 golfers at 6-over 216 following his third consecutive 72. Starting from the 10th hole, Jin was at 1-under through 10 holes with birdies on the par-4, 445-yard 12th, par-3, 190-yard 13th and par-4, 464-yard 14th, and the par-5, 565-yard first. However, a double bogey on the par-4, 483-yard third, and back-to-back bogeys on the par-3, 247-yard fourth and par-4, 481-yard fifth holes quickly put him at 3-over. Jin rebounded with a birdie on the par-4, 440-yard seventh to finish his final round at 2-over 72.

Puwit Anupansuebsai (Nakhon Phanom, Thailand), meanwhile, posted an even-par 70 today to finish tied for 34th at 7-over 217. Anupansuebsai’s up-and-down round featured four birdies, including the par-3, 192-yard 16th, the par-4, 389-yard second, the par-4, 406-yard sixth and the par-4, 407-yard ninth, along with two bogeys and an unfortunate double bogey on No. 4. He did play his final four holes of the tournament at 2-under.

Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) started and ended his day in a tie for 41st at 9-over 219 after a 2-over 72 on Tuesday. Guezzale sank two birdies - par-4, 430-yard 15th and No. 9 - along with 12 pars and four bogeys.

Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) completed his first tournament in San Diego State’s starting lineup in a tie for 54th at 12-over 222. Today Townsend shot a 5-over 75 with birdies on No. 6, No. 7 and No. 14.

Steve Sugimoto (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) was a shot back of Townsend in a tie for 60th at 13-over 223 following a 4-over 74 today. After back-to-back bogeys to start his final round, Sugimoto got back to even for the day with consecutive birdies on the par-4, 387-yard 17th and the par-4, 441-yard 18th. A double bogey on the third hole, however, and bogeys on both No. 4 and No. 5 saw him shoot a 4-over 39 on the back nine for a 74 overall.

Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan led the tournament wire-to-wire and finished at 11-under 199, six strokes clear of Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen (-5), to claim medalist honors.

San Diego State will complete its fall season at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup at The Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas from Oct. 18-20.
