Aztecs finish 11th in Bremerton, Washington

September 20, 2023 (Bremerton, Wash.) - The San Diego State men’s golf team finished in 11th place at the Husky Invitational Tuesday, firing a 1-over-par 289 in the final round Tuesday at the par-72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club (Olympic Course).

The Aztecs collectively finished at 9-over 873 to take 11th of 14 teams, beating out St. Mary’s (+15), Colorado State (+17) and Seattle (+38). Tournament host Washington easily won the team championship at 40-under 824, while Oklahoma (-14), California (-12), Oregon State (-12) and Oregon (-7) rounded out the top 5.

 

Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) led SDSU in a tie for 32nd out of 78 players at 1-over 217 following a 1-over 73 today.

 

Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) jumped up 21 places to a tie for 36th at +2 following a 2-under 70, while juniors Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) finished in a tie for 44th and 48th, respectively. Hastings carded an even-par 72 today and finished at 3-over 219, while Lague’s 2-over 74 had him finish at +4. Junior Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) also competed and tied for 69th at 11-over 227.

 

Washington’s Taehoon Song (-15) edged out teammate Peter Hruby (-12) by three strokes to capture medalist honors.

 

Three other SDSU golfers competed as individuals in the Husky Individual (par-72, 7,055 yards). Senior Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) shot a 5-under 67 in today’s final round to finish in a tie for ninth out of 49 at 7-under 209. Freshman Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied for 35th at 3-over 219 following an even-par 72 and junior Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) came in a tie for 41st at 5-over 221 with a 1-over 73 today.

 

Oregon State’s Stanley Lin shot his third straight 67 to win the Husky Individual at 15-under 201.

 

San Diego State next competes at New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Sept. 25-26 at UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
