October 27, 2021 (San Diego) - The Aztec men’s soccer team (8-4-2) beat San Diego Christian (5-9-2) 3-1 Wednesday evening on the SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, SDSU ends its non-conference season with a 6-0-2 record, their first time going undefeated in non-conference since 2005.

The Aztec goals came from Donovan Roux, Blake Bowen and Jordan Korbus, who was making his first career start. SDSU outshot the Hawks 15-5 and put 10 shots on goal.

“It was good to unlock some attackers,” Head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. “We focused on trying to free them up a bit more and turn them loose and make some good runs. It was great to see Jordan, who has fought through some many injuries, to come in and score. He had been hitting goals like that in practice. He did well, not only with the goal, but also a great game all around.”

SDSU’s first goal came in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick from Donovan Roux, who drew a foul in the box.

In the 41st minute, Blake Bowen scored his third goal of the season after finishing a nice through ball from Austin Wehner.

The most impressive Aztec goal came in the 47th minute when Jordan Korbus collected a pass from Laukoa Santos and fired a rocket from 30 yards out into the upper corner. It was Korbus’ first career goal.

SDSU outshot the Hawks 8-1 in the second half, but their one shot found the back of the net in the 89th minute.

Goalkeeper Jacob Castro (8-4-2) pitched a shutout in the first half and then Tetsuya Kadono held the Hawks scoreless for the first 42:37 of the second half before he was lifted.

STAT OF THE MATCH

The Aztecs put 10 of their 15 shots on frame.

THE NOTE

The Aztecs improved to 7-0-0 at home, their longest win streak to start a home slate since 1991.

QUOTE OF THE MATCH

“We talk about making the Sports Deck our fortress. It’s a really difficult place for opposing teams and we play a style that is very conducive to this pitch.”  -Head Coach Ryan Hopkins
