“The guys came out from the opening whistle very prepared,” Head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the game. “We challenged them this week to bring more intensity as a group and I thought they stepped up and showed that.”
The Aztecs outshot the Mustangs 13-6, including a 9-3 advantage in the second half while goalkeeper Logan Erb had a pair of fantastic saves. Erb (Houston, Texas) has posted a clean sheet in all three of his career starts.
In the opening minute, Rommee Jaridly received a long pass and then scored on a give-and-go with Alexander Levengood. After collecting Levengood’s nifty through ball, Jaridly took one touch that fired a shot with his left foot into the bottom right corner of the goal.
In the 17th minute, Jaridly was on the receiving end of a violent spike by Cal Poly’s Leonardo Martinez, who was issued a red card forcing the Mustangs’ to play with 10 men for the remaining 73 minutes.
Jaridly was in the middle of another big play in the 27th minute. A failed clearance by Cal Poly ricocheted off him to Terence Okoeguale behind the defense, who placed it between the keeper’s legs to put SDSU up 2-0.
The Aztecs tacked on one more in the 81st minute when Austin Brummett headed in a Jules Anderson corner kick.
