February 21, 2017 (San Diego) - Since the rest of the Campbell/Cartier Classic last weekend was rained out, SDSU softball didn't returne to Aztec Softball Stadium until tonight when they hosted the Siena University Saints on Tuesday night.  Senior righty Erica Romero got the start for the Aztecs against Siena’s freshman righty Maddie McMahon.

The Aztecs took advantage of the Saints’ 0-5 record early.  In the first, after freshman center fielder Kiera Wright effortlessly stole second and third, junior designated player Jenavee Peres drove her home with a single and SDSU took a 1-0 lead early.  With the bases loaded, senior catcher Frankie Orlando knocked an RBI single into center and the Aztecs led 2-0.  Freshman shortstop Shelby Thompson made up for her two-error performance Thursday night with an RBI single up the middle and the Aztecs led 3-0.  Senior right fielder Jaylene Ignacio did her part with a single and the Aztecs went up 4-0.  Junior left fielder Zaria Meshack hit a sac groundout and the Aztecs ended a huge first inning up 5-0.

In the second, Orlando hit a long drive to left center.  Unfortunately, it wasn't a home run, but it did score junior first baseman Taylor Stewart and the Aztecs went up 6-0.

The Saints got some reprieve in their half of the third with junior shortstop Paige Hess’ sac fly that put them on the board and made the score 6-1 Aztecs.

The Saints chipped away at the Aztecs’ lead again in the fifth with sophomore second baseman Jazmin Ortiz’s single that scored junior center fielder Brooke Taylor all the way from first and the Aztecs led by four, 6-2.

The Aztecs pulled away in their half of the fifth with Ignacio’s double that scored Thompson and they were up by five again, 7-2.

That cushion didn't last long, however, as in the top of the sixth, Siena sophomore third baseman Loryn DeFalco smashed a solo homer off of Aztecs junior pitcher Alex Formby and the score was 7-3 SDSU.

Sophomore third baseman Molly Sturdivant added two much-needed insurance for the Aztecs in their half of the sixth with a looping double that scored Peres and West Hills High graduate Katie Byrd to give the Aztecs a 9-3 lead.  Orlando singled to bring home sophomore pinch hitter Aris Metcalfe and make the score 10-3 Aztecs.

The Saints scored a mercy run on Hess’ sac groundout in the seventh, but the Aztecs held the fort down and won 10-4, bringing their record back to .500 at 4-4.

The Aztecs travel to Cathedral City, California next week for another tournament, the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.  They’ll begin next Tuesday with a doubleheader against Oklahoma State at 6:00 p.m. and then against Florida State at 8:30 p.m.
