April 1, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past San José State, 5-3, Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (19-14, 3-5 MW) handed the Spartans (23-11, 3-2 MW) just their second loss in the past 15 games.

Down by a 3-1 score after SJSU scored all of its runs (all unearned) in the top of the fourth, SDSU tied it quickly as Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Shelby Thompson (Benicia, Calif.) led off with back-to-back home runs. After a groundout, San Diego State loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.), Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.). After San José State head coach Peter Turner was ejected for arguing Meshack’s single, Katie Byrd ripped a single down the right-field line to plate Wright and Peres with the go-ahead runs.

The Spartans got two runners on base in the top of the seventh on singles, but Aztec reliever Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) was able to get Madison Aurin to line out to Wright in center field to end the game and stop SDSU’s three-game losing streak.

San Diego State had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when Meshack scored on a single by Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.).

SJSU scored three times in the fourth, all unearned off Aztec starter Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.). A throwing error by Romero with one out allowed Makayla Englestad to score from second base, which tied the game at 1-1. San José State followed with a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Jenner and a double by Emma Entzminger to take the 3-1 lead.

The Aztecs outhit the Spartans 13-6 for the game.

Peres had two hits, a run and a walk to pace the SDSU offense, while Cable, Thompson and Wright added two hits and a run apiece. Sturdivant also reached twice with a single and a walk.

Formby (5-3) picked up the win after allowing two hits over 3 1/3 innings of relief. Romero gave up three unearned runs on four hits and two hit batters over 3 2/3 innings, while striking out one in her team-leading 11th start of the year.

San Diego State looks to win the series on Sunday with the first pitch slated for noon PT.
