Aztecs win tenth straight season-opening pentathlon with the Toreros

Septembere 17, 2021 (San Diego) - The San Diego State swimming and diving team kicked off their 2021-22 season with a pentathlon win over the University of San Diego Toreros, 18-6, Friday afternoon at the USD Sports Center Pool in San Diego.

Senior Kristina Murphy started her final campaign with the Aztecs on a high note, topping the pentathlon standings with a 4:59.19 combined time. Behind her was sophomore Alex Roberts, finishing with a total time of 5:00.58. Junior Riley Tapley rounded out the top three finishers with a total time of 5:03.01.

Also earning top-10 finishes in the pentathlon, in order of finish, were junior Evonne Stehr, senior Cassie Phillips, sophomore Wilma Johansson, senior Mia Ryan, senior Sammy Geyer, junior Emily Gebhardt and sophomore Lexi Anderson.

 

In the individual pentathlon events, Ryan swam the fastest 100 free, touching the wall with a time of 53.09. Phillips led the 100 fly standings, finishing with a time of 56.81. Roberts tied with USD’s Abby Muaddi for the fastest backstroke finish, each recording a time of 59.14. Murphy earned the top finish in the 100 breaststroke touching the wall in 1:04.55. The senior wrapped up pentathlon competition with a top finish in the 100 IM, finishing with a time of 59.42.

 

The teams swam additional events while competing at the USD Sports Center Pool. These events were not scored in the results but gave both the Aztecs and Toreros benchmarks to continue their early-season training with.

 

In the 50 free, Phillips sprinted to a 24.56 finish, followed by senior Cathy Cooper, who finished with a time of 25.12. Phillips also topped the 50 fly standings, recording a time of 25.91. Geyer earned the top mark in the 50 breaststroke, touching the wall in 31.62. Stehr swam the fastest 50 backstroke efforts of the day, touching the wall in 27.66.

 

To close out the day, Murphy topped her fellow competitors in the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.30. Junior Paige Mitchell finished the day’s events with the top mark in the 500 free, swimming to a time of 5:17.02.

 

The Aztec swim and dive team continue 2021-22 competition in October when they travel to Malibu, Calif. to take on the Pepperdine Waves for a dual meet on October 7.
