SDSU Athletics

April 7, 2011 (San Diego)--The San Diego State track and field team will split its squad this weekend, sending student-athletes to both UCLA and Arizona State for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational and Sun Angel Track Classic.

Seven Aztecs will travel to Los Angeles for the three-day Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, which starts Thursday with the heptathlon. Freshman Allison Reaser, who won the pentathlon at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships in a school-record effort and is the reigning Junior Olympics champ in the hep, as well as sophomore Kiersten Kirkland are each slated to compete in the two-day event.

Action will continue on Friday with Sara Beyers and Missy Bunn competing in the 1,500-meter run, and Alma Escobar running the 5,000.

Three more Aztecs will compete on Saturday (April 9) to conclude the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, highlighted by sophomore Alex Evans in the triple jump, the final event of meet for SDSU. Evans has placed no lower than sixth in that event in 2010-11, dating back to the beginning of the indoor season.

The rest of the team will head to the desert to compete in the Sun Angel Track Classic at Joe Selleh Track in Sun Angel Stadium, taking place on Friday and Saturday.

In Tempe, Ariz., the Aztecs will be led by school hammer-throw record holder Whitney Ashley and Shanieka Thomas and Lawreta Ozoh. Fifteen San Diego State athletes in all will compete over the weekend in the Grand Canyon State.

SDSU is coming off a team win at the Cal/Nevada Championships two weekends ago, the program's first since 2008. Ashley set the pace in that meet by winning both the shot put and discus throws, while setting the school record in the hammer throw.
