September 9, 2016 (Kingston, R.I.) - San Diego State defeated Rhode Island, 3-2 (18-25, 27-25, 15-25, 25-15, 17-15) in its opening match at the Art Carmichael Invitational in Kingston, R.I.

SDSU evened its season record at 4-4 while URI fell to 3-4.

The Aztecs will face Notre Dame ad Stony Brook on Saturday to conclude tourney play.
