No. 18-ranked San Diego State lost to No. 2 Stanford and No. 9 Arizona State on Sunday at the Stanford Invitational

February 6, 2022 (Stanford) - Sophomore Laurene Padilla scored five goals to lead the No. 18-ranked San Diego State water polo team on Sunday, in its opening two games of the season, but a pair of top-10 teams, No. 9 Arizona State and host and No. 2 Stanford, topped the Aztecs in the Stanford Invitational.

Laurene Padilla found the back of the net three times to lead the Aztecs offense against the Sun Devils, but Arizona State jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Dayna Bond got the Aztecs on the board with 2:01 left in the first period. After ASU pushed its lead back to three, 4-1, Delaney Binette got the goal back with 52 ticks left on the clock and at the end of the first quarter, the Aztecs trailed by a pair of goals.

 

Arizona State scored twice to open the second period. Binette’s second goal of the game, with 6:06 to go before the intermission, made it 6-3 and the team’s traded scores heading into halftime. Padilla tallied the Aztecs goal with 55 seconds to play to send the teams to the locker rooms with SDSU down 7-4.

 

Padilla got the first goal coming out of halftime to trim the deficit to two, but Arizona State scored twice in the third quarter and took a 9-5 lead into the fourth.

 

Padilla got San Diego State’s lone goal in the final period, which was sandwiched between a pair of ASU goals for the final score of 11-6.

 

Padilla led the attack with eight shots. Binette and Jessica Leckich took three shots each, and Valhalla alum Spencer Samuel produced two.

 

In addition to the six goals, Kendall Houck, Samuel, Samantha Loughlin and Rose Kanemy were each credited with an assist. In goal, Raquel de Pinho made eight saves.

 

The Sun Devils had four scorers with two goals each, most notably former Aztec Emily Bennett.

Laurene Padilla scored two of the Aztecs four goals against the Cardinal, but Stanford showed why it is so highly ranked.

The score was 5-0 before Spencer Samuel put San Diego State’s first goal on the board. It came with two seconds to play in the first quarter.

 

After a pair of Stanford goals to begin the second stanza, Karli Canale struck to make it 7-2. The Cardinal scored three more times, before Padilla’s first tally of the game. The final goal of the half went to Stanford who had an 11-3 lead after 20 minutes.

 

A pair of goals in the first minute of the third period, one from each team made it 12-4, with San Diego State’s goal coming from Padilla.

 

Stanford totaled the final seven tallies of the game for the 19-4 decision.

 

Padilla attempted a team-high five shots. Dayna Bond took four, while Jessica Leckich and Samuel produced three each and Kendall Houck took two. Delaney Binette had two assists and Katie Ratcliff one.

 

San Diego State used two goalies. Raquel de Pinho played 24 minutes and surrendered 14 goals, making two saves. Santana alum Zoe Morgan played eight minutes and let in five goals.

 

Stanford was led by five goals each from Aria and Makenzie Fisher. Maya Avital gave up four goals and made 11 saves.
